”Ultramarine is a blue pigment consisting of the natural mineral lazurite. It was the most expensive pigment in history, made from the precious gemstone lapis lazuli. When its chemical secrets were revealed in the nineteenth century, it became the most mundane pigment, even used in detergent as ‘laundry bluing.’”
