During this 2-session oil painting class, we will:

  • Explore the beauty of color theory and discover how to blend colors with confidence and intention.
  • Learn how to thoughtfully compose a still life and select a meaningful reference photo to inspire your work.
  • Transform a simple reference image into a graceful, finished painting that reflects your own artistic vision.
  • You will also learn why oil is the best medium for creating a beautiful still life

Sam Day is an illustrator and urban noir artist. He is a Shoreline-based painter who studied for three years at Gage Academy of Art in the Mark Kane-O’Higgins Atelier, earning the “Best in Gage” award upon graduation. An active artist, he is known for his strength in color theory, and Sam especially enjoys portrait painting of both people and pets, bringing a thoughtful and expressive approach to his work. He is passionate about teaching and sharing the practical techniques and insights he has developed through years of dedicated practice.

Supply List: Note from the instructor Sam Day: Oil painting requires more supplies than any other painting medium, but they also offer remarkable versatility and the ability to create truly beautiful images, in a way that no other medium can. The extra tools are well worth the investment, rewarding you many times over in both creative freedom and enjoyment.

Every student will need:

  1. Oil paint, assorted colors: Primary colors yellow, red, blue, as well as orange, black, white, a couple different browns, purple and magenta.
  2. Brushes in assorted sizes: 0-5 or 6, filbert, round and bright.  Preferably smooth bristols, such as sable or imitation sable.  No rough hog bristle brushes at this time (they have their place, but not here).
  3. Odorless Gamsol mineral spirits
  4. A small bottle of linseed oil.
  5. A mixing container like a small jar with a lid.  We will mix gamsol and linseed oil 50/50 in the jar.   It doesn’t need to be bigger than 6- 8 oz.
  6. A larger quart sized container with a lid like an empty peanut butter  jar. This is for cleaning your brushes.  You need to be able to swish the brush around briskly to remove the paint from the brush.
  7. Canvas or board, at least 8X10 inches.  The paintings themselves will be done at 8X10, so it can be bigger, but not smaller.  The canvas or wood panel should be pre-primed (with gesso or white acrylic paint).
  8. A palette knife for mixing paint.  To save money you can use a plastic fast food knife, or any such utensil.
  9. Pencil, preferably hard, like 4H or 6H.
  10. A palette. This can be just a flat piece of plastic, glass or a paper palette at least 8”X 8”.
  11. A roll of paper towels.
  12. Disposable surgical gloves
  13. A sketch book for planning out painting.  (optional)

Artworks will provide: rulers, easels, pencils, and aprons.
