You will learn by example what marks are, what they do, and how to use them in your work. You will go home with samples of your own marks that you can use for reference and add to your own markmaking library. We will show you how to let go by using large gestural marks and discuss the creation of grids to expand your repertoire of small marks. You will learn about our favorite tools, how you can discover unusual items in your junk drawer and the hardware store. Don’t fall in love with a mark because this is experimental and nothing is precious. In this SHOW and DO exploratory class you will learn to push the limits of your art, take risks and try something new.
It is our intent that you will use as many supplies as you can from home without purchasing high end supplies. Household items are best.
- Roll of paper towels
- Small paper: 25 sheets of letter-sized printer/copy paper
- Scrap paper: Anything you have lying around
- Brush: small 1” or larger inexpensive chip brush or foam brush
- Brush: used wide house paint brush from home
- Variety of pens, pencils, black markers large and small, eraser
- Containers for water
- Lunch

Students will explore printing on the gell press using acrylic paint. Making patterns using recycled household materials, cutting stencils and masks and printing on a variety of papers; recycled and new. Each student will make at least 2 dozen monoprints for further use in collage or journals. Emphasis on imagery from nature and positive/negative composition. This is a fun and colorful process and easily addictive.
