Learn to Photograph Birds

Strategies and camera techniques to fit birds in flight, at your feeder or in a bush.

Learn how your camera’s exposure and focus settings best fit the different ways that you will encounter birds. All those autofocus options exist for good understandable reasons. You often have to deal with poor light but new post-processing tools can help. Discover resources for being where the birds are. See how you can start getting good photos now, before you invest in that looong lens of your dreams.

Make “pop” what inspired you! Learn to crop out distractions, lighten or darken, reveal detail, correct colors and straighten perspective. Selectively blur or blacken backgrounds with masked brushes.

Get a big boost up the Lightroom Classic learning curve. Avoid common pitfalls. Includes:

Efficiently shoot dramatic images of the Milky Way. See how to plan, capture and post-process photographs of our home galaxy. Don’t waste your time standing around in the dark, so to speak.

Free sites get you to the right place, at the right time. Post-processing is required to bring out the best of the glory the camera sees. The seminar has examples in Lightroom and Photoshop to get you started.

Demystify Camera Exposure and Focus

Get off auto by partnering with the camera. Learn the exposure triangle and focusing modes.

Take your camera off full auto for better photos.

Learn what f3.5, ISO 200 and histogram mean. Keep detail in bright whites and saturated colors. Capture as much shadow detail as possible. Understand how to make the ISO-aperture-shutter “exposure triangle” tradeoffs fit your subject.

Have blur only when it improves the image, whether it’s due to motion or scene depth. Use selective focus to draw in the viewer. See how the camera’s autofocus modes work, especially for moving subjects.
